This is actually a great article with a dumb title! Wolf Creek Lodge is one of those sustainable communities being build right now.
Here is a piece of the article:
Co-housing projects for older Americans, communities of homes on shared land that residents build and operate themselves, are on the rise. The first such development, Glacier Circle in Davis, Calif., opened in 2006. Since then, at least three more have been built — including ElderSpirit in Abingdon, Virginia and ElderGrace in Santa Fe, N.M — and roughly another eight will be under construction by the end of this year, says Charles Durrett, a co-founder of co-housing development company McCamant & Durrett Architects and author of “Creating Cohousing: Building Sustainable Communities.” Read More

The long wait is finally coming to an end, and we will be moving into our beautiful Lodge by August or September of this year. We have only a few units left. All the one-bedroom homes are now taken, and we have started a waiting list for these smaller units. Those that remain are larger: two bedrooms/one bath (about 1030 sq. ft.) and two bedrooms/two baths (about 1140 sq. ft.).
Many people are already quite excited about the idea of cohousing and all the benefits it brings. Living in community with folks who share a common vision is the most important of these. It has been shown over and over again that companionship with people who care and can help each other in many small ways keeps us happy and healthy longer than living in isolation. Life is just more enjoyable that way.
BUT there is that old finance thing. You know it’s not too much money because it’s exactly what you want and need. However, you have to deal with banks that want those green pieces of paper up front.
Have you ever considered sharing one of the two-bedroom units with a like-minded cohouser? You might co-own or buy and sublet. You may think: Oh, here goes my privacy! But consider this: In cohousing we do not plan to live in just our individual units. We have the wonderful common rooms: kitchen and dining room, sitting room with lovely fireplace, ample terrace in front, and our gardens and green space down by the Creek. We share the Petanque court and the hot tub. So you probably won’t be sitting “on top of each other.”
Just a new idea! If you’d like to explore this option, please let us know. ( email info@wolfcreeklodge.org.)
